A CLASSIC DECK, A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
The historical deck
Tarovia uses the original Rider–Waite–Smith illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith, created with A. E. Waite and originally published in 1909–1910. The bundled historical scans are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and retain the original illustrations. Per-card source and public-domain notices are included with the app’s source and third-party notices. Modern recolorings and proprietary card backs are not used.
Original Tarovia content
The approachable upright and reversed interpretations, reflection questions and interface are created for Tarovia. We consulted historical texts to understand the symbolic tradition and wrote the app’s interpretation copy afresh, in seven languages.
Reading background
- A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910/1911): symbolic details, Major and Minor Arcana, and reading methods.
- S. L. MacGregor Mathers, The Tarot (1888): historical suit meanings and reading conventions.
These historical sources include dated beliefs and deterministic claims. Tarovia adapts symbolic ideas into reflective language rather than presenting such claims as established facts.
